new years eve gender reveal party!

i love the idea of a gender reveal party! i have known i wanted to do one since before i was pregnant so as soon as we got home from our trip i began googling ideas.

i knew right away that i didn't want to do the traditional half baby blue half baby pink theme that seems to be prevailing the gender reveal world these days. but i wasn't sure what i DID want to do...

we found out that we would be receiving the big news the week between christmas and new years so we decided to have our party on new years eve! we went with the classic black/white/gold new years theme with some wintery elements thrown in there too. i just LOVE how it turned out!

we decided that we wanted to wait and find out the news with everyone at our party. so the sonogram technician wrote down the big secret and sealed it in a tiny envelope for us.

it was TORTURE not to rip that thing open for 2 days but we did it and i'm sooooo glad!

the surprise was definitely worth it!

the reveal.

for the big reveal we decided to set off fireworks!

we had bought both pink and blue fireworks and had them all ready down by the pond behind our house.

there was a fuse to one labeled "boy" and a fuse for the pink ones labeled "girl".

everyone went outside and we handed the envelope to a friend of ours.

he headed down to the pond in the dark, opened the envelope, read the results, and lit the right fuse.

the we all had to wait to see which what color they would be!!!!

i have been meaning to upload some pictures of the house all decorated for christmas but i haven't had time.

i figured i better hurry up and do it today before i start ripping it all down tomorrow.

everything is pretty much the same as last year with a few new additions...

the trees on the dining room table and the end tables in the living room are new.

the living room ones are from home goods and the dining room ones are from kohls.

we've had these stockings for a few years now, but the new addition in the molding behind it!

i got one of those cheap wood pieces from home depot, painted it white, and added it to the fireplace a few months ago.

i just LOVE how it turned out! it's a small touch, but one of my favorite things about our living room now! ha

we have always spent christmas with one of our families, but this year it was just the ~~two~~ three of us.

i only have 2 days off work so we really didn't have enough time to sneak in a trip to florida to see my family and kent's family celebrated christmas a couple weeks ago.

but i have actually really been looking forward to our weekend alone. i feel like this may be the last quiet christmas just the two of us ever have again.

next year our little monkey will be here, and hence, the grandparents :)

hello sweet thing :)

mommy has been so bad about journaling lately. Oops. It has been way too long since I wrote to you. You are now 8 weeks and 4 days young and growing like a weed! Last week you were the size of a blueberry and this week you are already the size of a kidney bean!

so many exciting things have happened in the past few weeks! the most important thing is that we got to announce your arrival to our friends and family! i can't even begin to tell you how excited everyone is to meet you...

daddy and i decided that we wanted our families to be the first to know about you when we got home from italy. i was worried about how i would tell my family because my parents and sisters live in florida and your uncle james and aunt ariel live in nashville, tennessee. i had always dreamed of announcing the big news to everyone at once, but now that we are so spread out i just didn't think that would ever work out. we knew that your nana and poppa were planning and trip to nashville to see uncle james and aunt ariel sometime in the fall, so we decided to drive down and meet them when they came so that we could at least tell them in person. they finally picked a date in october and we knew we were going to have to keep you a secret for about 3 weeks until their trip. it was soooooo hard!!! daddy and i were not supposed to be telling anyone about you but we kept slipping because you are all we can think about all day every day! your daddy told one of his co-workers and your uncle kyle and i told a couple of the girls at work and some man that works at kentucky fried chicken. i just wanted to scream to everyone, "i'm gonna have a baby!!!!"

those 3 weeks crawled by so slowly. every time i talked to one of my friends or family members on the phone it was all i could do not to tell them all about you. finally, it was the weekend before we were supposed to go to tennessee. i was talking on the phone to your aunt laura and she said she was thinking about coming up with nana and poppa! i couldn't believe it!! i was so excited to think that she might get to be there when we told everyone about you but i didn't want to get my hopes up or let her on to anything so i tried to stay calm....and then i called your aunt emily to see if she could get off work and come too! she said she probably could! i couldn't believe it! both your aunts got off work and decided at the last minute to come up to tennessee too! i was so happy when i found out i just cried and cried. everything was working out so perfectly and they didn't even know it!

we were originally planning to tell your daddy's family the day after we got back from our tennessee trip, but the night before we were going to leave, we found out that they were almost all going to be together at your grandma and grandpa's house. your daddy is from a very big family, so we decided to take advantage of having most of them all together to go ahead and share the news about you!

we had made a coffee table book with pictures from our trip to italy and on the last page there was a picture of the positive pregnancy test and mommy pointing at her tummy with a caption that read, "surprise!!!" your daddy gave it to grandma to look at while your aunts all crowded around it in the kitchen. the page before the big surprise page was pictures of us eating breakfast on our last day in italy. you could see your daddy's new mason ring up close in one of the pictures and your aunt kristen said, "kent are you a mason?" your daddy said, "yeah" right as grandma turned the page to the pregnancy test. she realized what it was and her eyes got so big, her mouth dropped open and she just stared at us for a second. then everybody else started realizing what was going on and they all started clapping and yelling at the same time. all i remember is that your aunt kari was standing beside me and she kept saying, "kent's a mason? what's a mason? what's a mason?" as she was clapping kinda slow. she thought everyone was cheering because your daddy was a mason! hahah everyone started hugging me and your daddy and aunt kari just looked so confused while she was clapping. then someone shouted out, "when are you due?" and she finally figured out what was going on. she goes, "oh my word, you're pregnant?" when i nodded yes she gave me a big hug and finally understood what all the fuss was about.

everybody was so so happy for us. they all wanted to know how i was feeling and when we found out about you. they wanted to know if we had names picked out for you and when you would be here. we talked about decorating your nursery and if you would be a boy or a girl. you are going to love having so many aunts, uncles, and cousins to play with :)

the next day we were planning to head to nashville as soon as i got off work. when i went to leave work we discovered that i had a flat tire! i called your daddy to come fix it for me but i recently got a new car and he couldn't get the tire off of it. we had to take it to a tire shop, get it fixed, go drop bella off at the babysitters, go home so your daddy could get a shower and pack...whew! needless to say we got on the road pretty late. we knew we wouldn't get into nashville until around midnight that night and i was disappointed because i knew your nana and poppa would most likely already be in bed when we got there. they were. it was so good to see your aunts and uncle james but it was so hard not to tell them about you that first night. we headed to our hotel and i felt like it was christmas eve or something. i couldn't sleep because i was so excited to tell everyone about you the next morning.

when we woke up we went to breakfast with nana and poppa and then headed over to uncle james and aunt ariel's apartment. we told everyone that we wanted to show them our pictures of italy and gathered everyone together in the living room. nana and poppa held the book and aunt laura and me sat on one side of them while aunt emily and aunt ariel sat on the other side. your uncle james was playing on his computer in the room and your daddy was positioned across the room from us so he could film the big reaction! every time they turned a page, i got more and more nervous for them to see the big reveal. when they finally turned the page, aunt emily shouted out, "pregnancy test!!?!?" and then they all just stared at me. she said, "do you have something to tell us?".....i just looked back at them for a second waiting for it to sink in but they all just stared at me with a blank look on their faces. so i finally pointed to the word "surprise!!!!!" on the page and said "you have to read it!" nana read it really slowly like a question and then she just kept saying, "sarah beth....sarah beth...." your poppa couldn't say anything. he was in shock! haha finally aunt laura gave me a hug and then all i remember is everyone hugging and nana and aunt emily kept crying. your daddy captured the sweetest video of the first few moments. your poppa just kept staring at me with the biggest grin on his face but totally speechless. i remember your aunt laura saying, "i kept staring at the picture but i couldn't understand how you got it to say 'yes'" haha! it was one of the best moments of my entire life. everyone was together and so happy. you are going to love being a part of the newsom bunch. we are so crazy but we love each other so much and we all adore you already.

we told them about the names we had picked out for you. your aunts and uncles loved them but i think they will have to grow on your grandparents a bit. they like much more traditional names and we want to name you something more unique. we went out to lunch at the restaurant where your uncle james is a chef. it's at a beautiful 5 star hotel in downtown nashville and it was so nice!

uncle james announced to the workers there that he was going to be an uncle and they made us the most beautiful dessert! it had the word "congratulations" painted on it in chocolate!

we had been calling you "blueberry" all day because we told everyone that you were the size of a blueberry. it was so neat because they brought out our dessert and it just happened to have blueberries on it! so cute! i can't believe you are that tiny!

afterwards we walked around a little pumpkin patch and just enjoyed spending time together as a family.

before we left that afternoon to head back to indiana, we had a family prayer for you! it was so sweet!

you are such a lucky baby! you have two wonderful families who love you so much and are so excited to meet you! almost as excited as mommy....:)

october 4, 2011 - hello monkey! today you are 5 weeks and 6 days young! i can't believe tomorrow will be 6 weeks! time is flying and i feel like i still have so much to do!

daddy and i are back in indiana now. we got home last week and i had to go back to work. boooooooooooo!

i really don't feel bad. i'm just so tired and wanted to nap everyday like i did on vacation. i still get dizzy when i'm standing in one place for very long. i have to sit down or walk around and then usually i feel fine.

we have got to do some fun things this week in preparation for you and i am loving every second of it!

i bought my first pregnancy magazine and read it on the plane ride back to america.

they had a test in there for first time moms and i got a 40 out of 100! can you believe that?!?

i'm pretty sure that's a f. it looks like your momma has a lot to learn!

so daddy and i went to barnes and noble this week to get some pregnancy books.

i got "belly laughs" by jenny mccarthy and your dad got "a daddy's guide to pregnancy" by michael crider. i read both of them in 3 days! ha!

i am going to the library this week to get some more.

we also went and walked around at buy buy baby this weekend.

there wasn't much we could get you yet since we don't know if you are a girl or a boy, but we did pick out some books for you!

bedtime stories and counting books! i can't wait to read them all to you over and over and over again.

i bought my first maternity shirt this week.

it's not maternity size since i don't have a big belly yet but its made for a pregnant woman to wear. i'm going to wear it on halloween this year!

i will take a picture in it and stick it in this journal for you...

hello my sweet baby!

today is september 22, 2011 and we are still on our trip around italy!

daddy and i are having the time of our lives and you have made this trip even sweeter!

we were so excited to come here and see everything and now that we know about you, it seems like none of it matters.

all i want to do is stroll around and hold daddy's hand and talk about you all day.

yesterday we rented a car and drove all over toscana (tuscany).

it was so peaceful and beautiful.

the mountains were covered in grape vineyards and olive trees. it looks exactly like you would imagine, just bigger and grander than i ever pictured.

that's how i feel about everything here.

i have given up on trying to take pictures of it all because there is just no way to capture how grand everything really is. we have started taking pictures with me pointing at my belly though, to show that you were here too!

we drove one of those little fiat smart cars yesterday and it was so cute.

i was glad that daddy was driving because the roads and traffic here are crazy!

but it was worth it for the amazing views that we saw.

we stopped to eat lunch at the most darling little restaurant ever!

it was right on the side of a mountain and overlooked the most amazing view of the tuscan countryside.

i was a little bit jealous because daddy got to drink what he said was the best wine.

but that's ok, you and me enjoyed our pasta just fine :)

i really want to be healthy while i'm pregnant with you so that you will be healthy too!

i have quit drinking wine and soda, and your dad is currently having to smoke his italian cigar outside

he tried to get me to go sit out there with him but i told him that you and i don't like smoke haha

i can't wait to get home and read some book about being pregnant and healthy.

i have so many questions!

today we are in cadenabbia, off the coast of lake como.

i wish you could see what we saw today.

i think this may be the most beautiful place in the world.

at least the most beautiful place i've ever been to.

daddy and i keep going back and forth about if it's prettier here or in california, but today i officially decided that it's here.

the mountains are so majestic, and the way they are sitting around the lake doesn't even look real.

it's just stunning.

you will have to come back here someday for sure.

maybe with us, or maybe with your own sweetheart. it is so relaxing and romantic.

i still don't feel like i'm pregnant, just kind of tired.

we had so many activities planned to do everyday of this trip and i don't think we have done half of them. ha!

we ran around like crazy for the first two days and after that we just decided that we love it so much, we know we will come back here for sure.

so we stopped trying to cram everything into just this one trip and decided to just spend more time relaxing.

we have taken a nap almost everyday and i love it!

i am not going to want to go back to work when i get home because i am getting so spoiled with this nap time!

while we were riding the train yesterday, daddy and i were watching a movie on the ipad.

one of the characters said a bad word and daddy paused the movie and turned to me and said,

"do you think we should stop watching this so the baby doesn't hear that kind of language?"

i laughed and told him you didn't even have ears yet!

he is going to be such a good daddy.

we have been calling you all kinds of funny names too.

he has been talking to you too (i don't have the heart to keep reminding him you can't hear him yet).

it is the sweetest thing and just melts my heart.

we promise you will have a better name than "meatball" though.

we decided on what your name will be yesterday and now i just can't wait to find out fi you are a boy or a girl!

i LOVE both the names so much!

i'm pregnant. oh my gosh that sounds so weird.

i don't believe it yet.

i'm gonna have a baby.

we are gonna have a baby.

i'm gonna be a mom.

i'm already a mom.

mom.

i don't know how i will ever live up to the standard that word holds for me.

my own mom is wonderful.

she'll be your "nana" and i already know you will love her and she will just adore you.

she is such a loving mom and i know that she will make a perfect grandmother to you.

she came from a hard and sad childhood, but you would never know it.

everything about her is selfless, giving, caring, honest...loving.

i want to be like that for you.

i love you so much already. i hope you can feel how much i love you.

i'm crying right now but they are all happy tears. my heart feels like it could just burst.

i keep thinking about that scene in dr. seuss' story "how the grinch stole christmas" when the grinch's heart

grows three sizes larger.

i think my heart did that today.

it had to.

there was just no other way it could hold all the love and happiness i have when i think about you and daddy.

i love him so much. he is laying beside me right now while i'm typing this.

today is me and daddy's third wedding anniversary and we are in italy celebrating!

i have wanted to come here ever since i was a little girl and my dream finally came true!

when your dad and i were dating, i asked him if he could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

i was so surprised when he said, "italy" and we have been planning this trip ever since.

we started off in Rome, tonight we are in florence, next we are going to lake como, then venice, and then back to rome.

i decided to bring a pregnancy test with me on this trip because daddy and i have been planning to have a baby sometime after our three year anniversary. i really didn't think i was pregnant when i took it this morning.

i always thought that when i was pregnant i would feel so different and be throwing up everywhere, but i feel so normal.

after i took it this morning, i left it in the bathroom for over an hour ( i kinda forgot about it) while i got ready to catch the train to florence.

right before we walked out the door of our hotel, i remembered that we had forgot to go look at the results of the test. i grabbed the camera and told daddy we needed to go back in and check it. i decided to make a little video clip just in case it really was the first moment we were finding out about you.

as we walked into the bathroom, i remember daddy saying, "babe, i really don't think you are..."

i said, "oh i know, but let's just check it. it'd be so cool to find out on our anniversary..."

i flipped on the camera and started filming while your dad picked it up.

at first he tried to act like he couldn't figure out how to read it but there was no hiding the look on his face.

i know it was positive even before i could read the word on the screen.

but then, i just couldn't believe it.

daddy kept kissing my forehead and laughing and saying, "happy anniversary" and i just kept saying,

"no way....no way....no way....babe there's no way..."

i hate how i sound in the video clip because i don't sound very happy...but i was just in shock!

i really couldn't wrap my head around the idea.

but sure enough, 5 tests later you are def on your way!

i can't wait until we get home from our trip so i can just tell everyone about you!

you already have so many friends and family who are going to love you so much.

but now one will ever love you like daddy and i do.

on a sidenote - this dress may be cute, but it caused me a lot of problems. they told us when we signed up for this tour that we couldn't wear shorts or anything sleeveless into vatican city because it is considered a "holy place"...ok does this dress break either of those rules? NO! lol

but i def got called out by our tour guide. right as we're about to start our tour with a group of like 40 people she goes, "miss....yes you....can you come to the front of the group please?"

i walk forward through the crowd and she looks me up and down and then goes...

"mmmm yeah you're not going to be allowed into the chapel dressed like that...i can see your knees"

me, "ummm...ok...so what should i do?"

her, "well if you want we can all go to the gift shop with you and let you buy a modesty scarf to try and cover your knees?"

me, "ummm ok"

so the whole freakin' group goes to the gift shop and stands outside while i buy the ugliest tan scarf thing for like 40 euro (65 dollars) that says "vatican city" all over it. and then they watch while i mummy myself up in the darn thing...

after we got past the guards at the entrance, i whispered to kent that i was going to attempt to take off my "modesty scarf" so he could get a decent picture of me inside the basilica. he nodded and backed up away from me with the camera about 15 feet. i looked around to make sure the coast was clear and slowly began to unwrap the nasty scarf.

of course, just as i pull it off, a guard comes charging through our tour group blowing his dang whistle and yelling, "no no no no no no no no!"

i mumbled "i'm sorry i'm sorry" and quickly began re-mummifying myself. i looked over at kent frantically, only to see that he had completely turned his back and was walking away into the crowd. LIKE HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ME! nice babe. nice.

ok...rewind a second!

first of all, thank you all for your sugary sweet comments!

we are so excited i can't stand it!

ok so let's rewind a bit so i can catch you all up on where we are now...(11 weeks 1 days...but who's counting?)

ok so when kent and i got married, we originally decided that i would be on bc for the first 3 years of our marriage. we had spend most of our dating relationship apart from each other, so we wanted some selfish time to ourselves. those three years were wonderful! we had time to build a home, kent quit his job and started his own business and we got to travel a lot. after 3 years we had agreed that i would quit my bc, but we weren't necessarily going to "try" to have kids. we just wanted to stop preventing them. whenever it happened would be fine with us, whether it was 1 month or 10 years. we still wanted it to have the element of surprise when we found out that we were going to be parents.

so fast forward a bit to this past january. i visit the ob/gyn and she asks me if we're thinking about having kids. i told her that we were planing a trip to italy in september for our 3rd anniversary and i really wanted to get pregnant while i was there. i told her to give me some tips. lol. she just laughed at me and made me re-tell my plan to the nurse when she came in. i told her that my plan was to get pregnant, in september, in italy. they both just laughed at me and told me good luck. then my dr. felt the need to have a heart to heart chat with me about how the odds of getting pregnant the first month you try are very slim to none and i shouldn't be disappointed if we aren't successful. she told me i would love the baby just as much if it was conceived in central indiana. i told her i knew all that...but still...it would be a fun story...

fast forward again to labor day weekend 2011. my mom and sister laura flew up to indiana to spend the long weekend with us. i LOVE having them here. on the way to take them back to the airport we stopped to get lunch and my mom starts talking to us about how she spent the morning reading her bible in our living room; and how while she was sitting there reading she started thinking about her grandchildren. she says she thinks she is getting pretty old and she wonders if she will ever even get to see one of her grandchildren graduate from high school. she told us that she just prays that she will still be around for that. (guilt trip much mom?) we take them back to the airport (sept 5th) and on the drive home i bring up the subject again with kent. we were talking about how excited she will be when she finds out that she will FINALLY get to be a grandma. i said, "well, only about a week of bc left...then we'll be in italy..."

kent said, "ahhh you might as well just stop taking it...we're practically there..."

so i did.

so the next week i was packing my bags for italy. i had bought a pack of those "5 days sooner" tests and i was thinking about how early i would be able to take one. i realized that it would be "5 days sooner" on september 20th, our anniversary! so i threw them in my suitcase.

and we were off! 09.16.11

back in september we spent almost 2 weeks in italy celebrating our 3rd anniversary!

it was the most beautiful trip of my life

we saw so many beautiful sights

and brought home the most amazing souvenir.

just wanted to share some pictures i took of our trip to california last month!

we had so much fun just walking around (and eating cotton candy).

my favorite part was seeing all the sea lions on the pier. they were adorable!
